My Science Career So Far….

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to write a blog post about my career so far. I have been asked a number of times now about how I got into science, and how I knew what I wanted to do- the answer isn’t simple, and my career path was more a meander than a straight forward route. So join me as I go through how I got to where I am today.

Meet the Scientist- Kara

Hello Everyone, for this weeks “Meet the Scientist” we are taking a look into the world of social science with Kara.

For any of you unfamiliar with social science, it is very broadly the study of human society and social relationships and can encompass a huge array of academic disciplines including linguistics, geography, economics, psychology ect.

Meet the Scientist: Layal Liverpool

For this week’s meet the scientist we say hello to Layal the lovely scientist behind sciencespedup on Instagram, and @Layallivs on twitter. On sciencespedup Layal showcases diverse science and scientists through sped up short science videos.

Layal was a PhD student (Massive congratulations for passing your Viva!) at the University of Oxford studying how human cells recognise virus infection. She was also a British Science Association media fellow, and freelance writer for the guardian, and now her PhD is over, she is continuing her career in science journalism. Layal is now working as a News Intern at New Scientist magazine in London.

Meet The Scientist- Alice Godden

Hello everyone. It has been quite some time since the last “Meet the scientist” feature- but sometimes it is worth the wait!

It would like to introduce you all to the lovely Alice Godden. Alice is a 2nd year PhD student based in the Wheeler lab at the University of East Anglia.  The Wheeler lab specialises in the investigation of tissue development, by using the model organism Xenopus, which is an African claw-toed frog.  As well as doing some super interesting work into tissue development. Alice is a great science communicator and has recently written an article in the science magazine Wonk, given a talk at the latest pint of science event, and presented her research in under 3 minutes as part of the 3-minute thesis competition.

How to effectively communicate science

Hi everyone! I am (finally!) back with a new blog post. Now I have settled into my new role as Postdoc a bit more, I will hopefully be getting back into the blogging again.

In this post I wanted to talk a bit about what helps to make a successful science talk. This is going to be focused on talks specifically for non-scientists, which is a very different audience, and which some of you may not have had much experience of.

Meet the Scientist – Dr Jaclyn Bell

In my blog so far I have interviewed some amazing female scientists with biology and chemistry backgrounds. I follow loads of scientsist on Instagram, but a relatively small number of the women I follow are physicists or mathematicians. Within subjects like physics, maths, engineering, chemical engineering women are still in the minority. And this is reflected in classrooms across the country.

Meet the Scientist- Melanie Jackson

Hi everyone!

This week we are moving out of the world of plants and cells, and into the world of marine biology.  Oceans cover a whopping 71% of our planet, but despite this we actually know very little about what lies in its depths. And, even though our oceans are extremely important for millions of different marine creatures, as well as ourselves, we have taken our oceans for granted.

Meet the Scientist- Kathryn De Abreu

Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago I posted on instagram asking for scientists to get in touch if they would like to be interviewed as part of my “Meet the scientist” feature. I was flooded with messages from scientists from all over the world- and have a few amazing scientists lined up to share their stories with you.

Meet the Scientist- Kirsten Hawkins

Hi Everyone!

This week I would like to introduce you to my little sister Kirsten. Unlike me, Kirsten went down the Chemistry route, and is now studying for her PhD at the University of York. As you will find out- the stuff she studies is amazing!
